We tend to take the humble potato for granted, we see it as a mere side act to the far more important star of the show – a delicious meat or Halaal fish dish from our favourite Johannesburg and Cape Town meat wholesalers. But the potato is so much more than just that, so much more in fact that the United Nations declared 2008 the International Year of the Potato (IYP).

In the US they have the right outlook on frozen foods – thanks to their National Frozen & Refrigerated Foods Association (NFRA) they dedicate the entire month of March to celebrating its versatility and convenience. Founded in 1945, the association has worked tirelessly to highlight the many benefits of frozen foods and to remind people that frozen food is ‘real food’ – just frozen.

Douglas Adams, the English author and humourist, said ‘it is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes’, and while that may be true in any one of his parallel universes, in this reality you can come pretty close – just imagine creamy mashed potato or crispy hash browns and suddenly your problems don’t seem so dire, do they?
