Welcome Winter Foods

We’re about to venture into our first month of winter and now, more than ever, we need to keep our spirits up and keep our health on track. Winter woolies, crackling fires, hearty stews and rich wholesome soups are the order of the day.

One of our favourite Halaal certified meat dishes has got to be oxtail stew. Originally considered a dish for the poor when meat was scarce and people had to make do with what they could lay their hands on, today oxtail stew is seen as a delicacy. This bony and gelatinous meat is best slow-cooked in a rich gravy of red wine, garlic and beef broth. Hearty, rich and nourishing, it tastes better if cooked the day before serving - it also freezes and reheats exceptionally well if you’re wanting to stock up on wholesome ready-to-eat meals.

Next on our list has got to be an aromatic Cape Malay curry - this dish is delicious at any time of the year, but in winter it gives us that extra boost of much-needed heat. Known for combining sweet and savoury flavours, the ideal meat to use for this dish is succulent lamb neck or shanks - infused in a rich sauce of blended spices and seasoning, it’s elevated to the sublime when served with a soft, warm, fluffy roti.

And then, what would winter be without a good soup? The first soups that spring to mind for most of us are probably hearty beef and vegetable, or chicken noodle soup; but another option to consider is incorporating Halaal fish into your soups. It turns out that one of the best ways to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD, also known as winter depression) is to up your intake of Omega-3 fats and fish is bursting with it. Not only is it good for SAD, but omegas can help with cholesterol levels, arthritis, brain function and mood stabilising. Consider a traditional fish-and-shellfish chowder or a delectable fish soup flavoured with white wine and garlic.
