A favourite for many of us thanks to its high protein content and lower saturated fat levels, the humble chicken is said to overtake pork as the world’s most consumed meat by 2023 – and it’s easy to see why, especially when you read about restaurants like Cocotte in Sea Point who specialise in French-inspired rotisserie chicken or Roast & Co who pioneered the mono menu movement and provide a wholesome chicken dining experience. So, in honour of this delicious and much loved white meat, here are 5 fun facts about our favourite poultry.

By now nearly everyone is familiar with the name Jan-Hendrik. Much like other first-name-only icons (think Bono, Sting and Madonna), last names are not necessary if you’re a renowned chef, owner of the eponymously named Jan restaurant in Nice, and the first South African ever to win a coveted Michelin-star – not once, but twice.

Lilly Bollinger, tasked with travelling the world and promoting the Champagne brand, once famously said ‘I drink it when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise, I never touch it—unless I’m thirsty.’ Much loved throughout the world, particularly at celebrations, few things are more synonymous with New Year’s festivities than Champagne.

Winter arrived with a bang in Cape Town this week as it was left battered and bruised in a storm said to be the greatest storm the Cape has seen in 30 years. Thankfully it also meant plenty of rain which is desperately needed considering the drought and the fact that the city was officially declared a disaster area earlier this year.
